Teen Killed in Motorcycle Crash in Manatee County

MotorcycleAccident

Motorcycles can be fun but they are also extremely dangerous, especially for younger, inexperienced riders. Sadly, this was recently the case for a teen from Parrish. He was killed after rear-ending a truck hauling a trailer.

The fatal accident occurred on the afternoon of November 19 in East Manatee County, at the intersection of U.S. 301 and 116th Ave. E. The 18-year-old motorcyclist was riding on westbound U.S. 301 at a high rate of speed. As he entered the intersection at 116th Ave. E., a truck hauling a trailer entered his path.

The motorcyclist could not slow down in time. He collided with the left rear of the trailer. The impact caused him to be ejected from his motorcycle. He came to a rest in the intersection. Manatee County emergency responders arrived to provide medical treatment, but the rider died at the accident scene.

The truck driver, a 28-year-old man from Missouri, was not injured in the crash. The accident is still under investigation.

Dangers of Speed in Motorcycles

Speeding on motorcycles poses several serious dangers, which can result in severe consequences for the rider. Some of the key risks include:

  • Loss of control. At high speeds, motorcycles are more difficult to control, especially in challenging road conditions. This can lead to crashes.
  • Increased stopping distance. The faster you’re going, the longer it takes to stop. This reduces the amount of time a rider has to react to an emergency situation.
  • Severe injuries. Motorcycles offer little protection in a crash, and high speeds increase the severity of injuries. The impact from a high-speed collision can result in fatal injuries.
  • Risk of ejection. Speeding can increase the likelihood that a rider will be thrown from the motorcycle in the event of a crash. Once ejected, riders are at much greater risk for head injuries, broken bones, or spinal damage.
  • Increased risk of losing balance. Speeding can cause a motorcycle to lose balance, especially when cornering or navigating curves. Higher speeds reduce the margin for error when making sharp turns, which can result in the rider losing control.
  • Impaired visibility. At higher speeds, it’s harder to notice smaller hazards, such as debris on the road, sudden changes in traffic, or other vehicles trying to maneuver. The windblast at higher speeds can also impair the rider’s ability to see clearly.
