Palmetto Car Accident Leads to Road Rage, Gunfire

RoadRage3

While traveling on Florida’s roadways, you never know what to expect. There may be sunny weather and a lot of traffic, but one thing drivers don’t usually expect is gunfire. A recent car accident in Manatee County led to road rage. Fortunately, nobody was killed or seriously injured.

A 50-year-old man from Riverview was arrested for his role in the road rage incident, which happened on the evening of May 5. The man has been charged with five counts of attempted murder after he shot multiple rounds into a vehicle following an accident. The incident resulted in bullets striking a 36-year-old woman pregnant with twins.

The incident unfolded when a pickup truck was traveling north on Business U.S. 41 North in Palmetto. The shooter was driving a BMW. He attempted to pass the truck in the merge lane when his rear bumper made contact with the truck’s front bumper. This caused the man to lose control and spin off into the grassy shoulder.

Someone in the pickup truck had gotten out to check on the man after the accident. That was when the man got out of his BMW. He ran to the truck’s passenger door and fired seven rounds at the truck. The bullets struck a 36-year-old pregnant woman multiple times in the lower torso. Fortunately, neither of the unborn children were hit.

After realizing his fiancée was injured, the 57-year-old driver of the pickup truck drove her to Manatee Memorial Hospital. She was later transported to Tampa General Hospital for surgery. She and both of the babies are in stable condition. The driver of the truck, as well as a 9-year-old girl, were not injured during the shooting

The suspect remained at the accident scene and spoke with deputies before they arrested him.

He is currently in the Manatee County Jail. Charges could be upgraded depending on the health of the woman and her babies.
