Man Injured, Yorkie Killed in Pit Bull Attack

Pitbulls

Pit bull attacks seem to be more and more common. These vicious dogs are attacking not only humans but also other dogs that are much smaller, causing heartbreak for these beloved owners of these innocent victims.

Sadly, this was recently the case in Florida. A Yorkie was killed in a pit bull attack, leaving its owner with serious injuries as well. The dog attack occurred on the morning of November 13 in DeBary.

A witness saw the attack unfold and tried desperately to save his neighbor’s dog, a Yorkshire terrier named Cannoli. He yelled at the top of his lungs for someone to help after a pit bull escaped from a nearby home and attacked Cannoli. Cannoli’s owner tried in vain to wrestle Cannoli away from the pit bull’s mouth. He was on the ground fighting the dog, doing what he could to save his beloved dog.

However, the pit bull had one goal: to kill the dog. Sadly, he died, and the dog’s owner was also bitten and left with several wounds on his arms, legs, and stomach. The neighbor suffered a few scratches and bites when he tried to intervene. Another neighbor tried to scare the dog away with a metal rod. The pit bull was hit in the back with the pole and he bent it. He let out a yelp but was fine otherwise.

The dog owner and the neighbor both went to the hospital for medical treatment. Animal Control is now investigating the incident. The pit bull is currently on a 10-day quarantine. Its owner could face criminal charges for the attack. The owner has inquired about euthanizing the dog.

Effects of Dog Attacks

Dog attacks can have serious consequences such as the following:

  • Physical injuries. The injuries from dog attacks can range from minor to life-threatening. They often include lacerations, puncture wounds, fractures, scarring, nerve damage, and infections.
  • Psychological effects. The psychological impact of a dog attack can be profound. Victims, especially children, may experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after a severe attack, which can manifest as flashbacks, nightmares, and severe anxiety. Depression, anxiety, and reduced quality of life are common among dog bite survivors. A traumatic encounter can also lead to a lasting fear of dogs, impacting daily life.
  • Legal and financial consequences. Dog attacks can lead to legal battles and financial hardships for both the victim and the dog owner. Treatment for severe dog bites can include emergency care, surgeries, and long-term rehabilitation, resulting in significant expenses. Dog owners may face legal action, including fines, lawsuits, or criminal charges if their dog is deemed dangerous.
