High Schooler Killed in Manatee County Motorcycle Crash

Motorcycle1

Motorcycle accidents are often deadly, especially for inexperienced riders. Many high schoolers and college students like to live adventurously. They think riding a motorcycle will be all fun and games. Yes, it can be a fun activity, but it needs to be taken seriously.

Sadly, an 18-year-old was recently killed in a motorcycle accident in East Manatee County. The fatal accident occurred on November 19 near the intersection of U.S. 301 and 116th Avenue E.

Max Peugh, a senior at Parrish Community High School, collided with a truck while riding his motorcycle near the intersection. The teen collided with the side of the truck’s trailer before being ejected from the bike. Max died at the accident scene.

The young man’s family and friends were devastated. More than 100 people attended Max’s celebration of life, where family and friends gathered to share memories of the adventurous teen who loved riding his new motorcycle, as well as skateboarding and snowboarding. A roadside memorial for Max sits on the sidewalk in Parrish.

Max had wanted a motorcycle for a long time. He celebrated his 18th birthday by taking a motorcycle safety course to earn his license.

Max was born in Michigan and moved to Pinellas County in the fourth grade. Max was an energetic young man who loved sports and food. After graduating high school, he planned to attend Manatee Technical College and possibly become a firefighter.

Two GoFundMe campaigns were created to help Max’s family pay for expenses. So far, they have raised approximately $40,000.

Dangers of Riding With Limited Experience

Motorcycles can be thrilling to ride, but they come with inherent risks, especially for inexperienced riders. Here are some key concerns:

  • Lack of experience with handling. Motorcycles require balance and precise control. Inexperienced riders may struggle with basics like cornering, braking, and throttle control, Misjudging speed and lean angles in turns can lead to accidents.
  • Increased vulnerability. Motorcycles offer little protection in the event of a crash. Inexperience can exacerbate this vulnerability, as riders might not react appropriately in dangerous situations. Without experience, riders might not know how to anticipate or avoid hazards like potholes, wet pavement, or gravel.
  • New riders sometimes overestimate their skills, leading them to take risks such as speeding or weaving through traffic. Overconfidence can result in inadequate reactions during emergencies.
  • Difficulty managing emergencies. Panic braking or overcorrecting can cause loss of control. Inexperience with counter-steering or evasive maneuvers may make it harder to avoid collisions.
