Florida Man Suing Netflix Over Mike Tyson Fight

Lawsuit

The highly anticipated fight between Mike Tyson and YouTuber Jake Paul was a huge letdown for a lot of people. Not only did boxing legend Tyson lose the fight but a lot of people watching the fight online didn’t get to view as much as expected due to streaming issues.

A Florida man is accusing Netflix of breach of contract over streaming issues he experienced during the fight. The lawsuit alleges that Netflix violated the Florida Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act. The man also claims Netflix is guilty of failing to provide a perfect viewing experience for millions of people as a network provider. The man is demanding monetary damages and a class action on behalf of other affected Netflix subscribers.

The class action lawsuit was recently filed in Hillsborough County. The man claims Netflix deceived him and many other users by creating an “unwatchable” livestream during the November 15 fight.

According to the lawsuit, 60 million Americans were hyped to see Mike Tyson versus Jake Paul, but all they experienced was “The Baddest Streaming on the Planet.” The lawsuit also claims that more than 100,000 people complained of problems online. Boxing fans wanted to see a legend in his possibly last fight but were faced with problems such as streaming glitches, and buffering issues. Some were denied access altogether.

The fight between Tyson and Paul was considered the most-streamed sporting event ever, with more than 108 million viewers around the world watching. The broadcast reached 65 million households in the United States, making up 56% of all viewership in the country.

While Netflix called the fight an “astronomical success,” the lawsuit claims viewers did not get what they bargained for, as they missed part or all of the fight. Despite the buffering issues and poor screen quality, viewers at home were still shown a little too much. A locker room interview led to a sudden view of Tyson’s buttocks.

This lawsuit could issue a challenge to how Netflix plans to handle future mass streaming events as it faces increasing competition. The company has not yet commented on the lawsuit.

This is not the first time Netflix has been sued for breach of contract. Earlier this year, Evil Genius Games amicably settled a lawsuit with Netflix over a Rebel Moon RPG. The lawsuit was filed in September 2023 and alleged breach of contract when work on a now-cancelled Rebel Moon RPG was terminated. The game will not be released after all.
