Sheriff’s Deputy Bitten by Great Dane

A dog bite can be life-threatening, especially when a person is bitten on the face. This is what recently happened to a sheriff’s deputy in Florida. He was bitten on the face by a Great Dane when responding to a complaint.
The incident happened on the morning of February 25. He was at a household in the Lake Wales area when he responded to complaints of a menacing dog. Duke Energy employees were investigating electricity theft in the area. When one person, a 28-year-old woman, was questioned by the utility company, she responded by siccing her two Great Danes on them.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office was called to the scene. When the deputy arrived and tried to talk to the woman, she called 911. The deputy moved to arrest her, but was attacked by a Great Dane. He was bitten on the arm and next to his eye, but the eye did not harm the actual eyeball.
The injured deputy was able to summon backup officers, who came to arrest the dog owner. The man has been with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office for nine years. His current condition is unknown. The Duke Energy employees were not injured.
Polk County Animal Control also arrived at the home and found that the two Great Danes were in very poor health. Both dogs were confiscated. An investigation determined that Duke Energy had cut off power from the dogs’ owner’s home and she was stealing electricity from them after that happened.
The woman was arrested and charged with multiple crimes:
- Aggravated assault on law enforcement
- Aggravated battery on law enforcement
- Two counts of aggravated assault
- Resisting a law enforcement officer with violence
- Resisting without violence
- Theft of utility services
- Petit theft
- Trespassing
- Animal cruelty
- Open septic
- Nuisance injurious to health
- Burning prohibited materials
- Waste tire disposal
- Misuse of 911
- Having an unpermitted landfill
Dog Bites to the Face
Facial dog bites are serious injuries that require prompt medical attention. If you or a loved one suffers one, follow these steps:
- Apply pressure to the wound to stop bleeding.
- Clean the wound gently with soap and water.
- Apply an antibiotic ointment.
- Cover the wound with a clean bandage.
- Seek medical attention.
Even minor facial bites should be examined by a doctor. Major bites, such as those that cause deep wounds or significant bleeding, may require major treatment. Stitches and antibiotics are common. If the dog was not vaccinated, you may need a rabies shot. Plastic surgery may be needed for more severe injuries.
