Florida Couple Mauled by Pit Bull Rescue Dog
Mother’s Day is a time for celebration, not a visit to the hospital. Unfortunately, a couple from New Smyrna had to be rushed to the hospital for surgeries on May 12 after being brutally attacked by their rescue dog, a Pit Bull that they had only had for about six weeks.
This was the second time the couple had been attacked by the Pit Bull. The couple barely made it out alive and would have likely died if sheriff’s deputies had arrived at their home any later.
One of the owners had just finished walking the dog when the incident occurred. A neighbor called 911 to report the dog attack and get help. The neighbor told the 911 operator that the dog was attacking the couple and that “we need someone to shoot the f****** dog.” It was a horrific scene, as the neighbor also said that the dog was mauling the couple, “tearing their flesh.” The homeowner had a handgun and was trying to shoot the dog, but did not fire any shots.
Deputies arrived at the dog’s home and could hear screaming coming from inside. They entered the bedroom and saw a brown Pit Bull growling and charging toward the door. There was blood splattered around the room and the deputies could hear two voices calling for help. They found a woman inside the dog’s cage trying to protect herself. That was when the Pit Bull turned its attention to the man and was mauling him on the bedroom floor.
To prevent the dog from further attacking its owners, a deputy fired off two shots from his gun. That was when the Pit Bull charged at the deputies. Fatally wounding the dog was the only option to stop the dog attack. The deputy fired a third shot, which stopped the Pit Bull from moving until it eventually died.
Deputies provided medical aid to both victims until EMS could arrive. Both victims suffered severe bleeding and deputies applied tourniquets. The couple was transported to a local hospital, where they were treated for their injuries. They had to have multiple surgeries.
The sheriff’s deputies were later reunited with the homeowners to check in with them and offer well wishes. The woman, whose right leg was injured in the dog attack, had a bandage on her foot. The deputies will be receiving awards for their heroic efforts in stopping the dog attack and rescuing the homeowners.
