Child, Grandmother Injured in Dog Attack
Dogs are supposed to be man’s best friend, so you can imagine the horror and frustration of a dog attacking its owners. This was what recently happened in Florida, seriously injuring two people.
The incident happened in Miami-Dade on January 31. A 3-year-old boy and his grandmother were attacked by their family dog in the 24400 block of Southwest 182nd Avenue. Both were seriously injured and taken to a local hospital. Their current conditions are unknown.
Miami-Dade Police officials and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue officials responded to a 911 call regarding the dog bite. They confirmed that the boy and his grandmother were attacked by the family’s dog, a 2-year-old German shepherd.
The attack was unprovoked and caused both victims to suffer extensive injuries. Due to the severity of the injuries, Animal Services said the dog will be humanely euthanized.
Behavioral Euthanasia
Dogs are often put down when they are old and or very ill and unable to live a happy, normal life. However, they can be euthanized for behavioral issues as well.
This is called behavioral euthanasia and it may be used to humanely end a dog’s life because of severe behavioral issues. This is not usually related to physical health, as the dog may be young and healthy. It is also not done for nuisance behavior that is not harmful, such as pulling on leash or jumping on guests. Behavioral euthanasia is about aggression relating to a dog who has caused harm to people or other animals. Dogs may be euthanized if they are deemed unsafe for life in our society.
It can be hard to tell if a dog is aggressive. Aggressive dogs are not necessarily snapping and growling all the time. Many aggressive dogs are actually quite loving with their owners most of the time. Plus, even the nicest, sweetest dog is capable of biting given the right circumstances. The key difference though, is that aggressive dogs are not trustworthy. They might have clear aggression triggers or they might be completely unpredictable. In any case, they are dangerous and can easily injure or kill someone at any time. They are like a ticking time bomb.
It’s important to understand that aggression may be caused by health issues. While fear or stress are major triggers, a dog that is in chronic pain may also be feeling irritable and aggressive. It’s a good idea to have an aggressive dog checked out by a vet to rule out any health concerns.
