5 Vehicles Involved in Fatal Crash

Many car accidents are minor events, although many can be serious, depending on the circumstances. Intersections are major parts of the roadway that can lead to fatal crashes, especially if one driver fails to follow the laws.

This recently happened in Sarasota. A driver failed to stop at a red light, causing a crash that involved five vehicles and killed one person. Nine others were injured.

The fatal accident occurred on the afternoon of April 23 at US 301 and Northgate Blvd. It all happened when vehicle 1, driven by a 38-year-old man from Mississippi, was heading south in the right turn lane. The man failed to stop for the red light at the intersection. At the same time, vehicle 2, an SUV driven by a 30-year-old Parrish woman, was in the intersection.

Three other vehicles — vehicle 3, vehicle 4, and vehicle 5 — were stopped at the red light at Northgate Blvd. Vehicle 1 hit vehicle 2 head on, causing it to rotate several times before overturning.

Vehicle 1 continued on. It traveled south in the intersection before overturning. The rear of vehicle 1 collided with the front of vehicle 3. This led to a domino effect, with vehicle 3 hitting the front of vehicle 4. As vehicle 1 continued to overturn, the front collided with the rear of vehicle 5.

A passenger in vehicle 2, a 71-year-old woman from Bradenton, died at the accident scene.

The driver and another passenger in vehicle 2, a 2-year-old from Bradenton, were seriously injured. The driver of vehicle 1 was seriously injured. His passenger, a 39-year-old Sarasota woman, is in critical condition. The drivers of the second and third SUVs hit, as well as the passenger of the third SUV, were seriously injured in the crash. The driver of the fourth SUV and his passenger, a 36-year-old Sarasota man, suffered minor injuries.

The crash is under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol Traffic Homicide Unit.

Intersection Crashes 

Car accidents at intersections are common, especially when there are parts of an intersection without a sign or signal. Unsignalized intersections are actually the most common type of intersection in the United States. They may consist of the following:

• Stop sign–controlled. This means that at least one part of the intersection is controlled by a stop sign.
• Yield sign–controlled. This means that at least one part of the intersection is controlled by a yield sign.
• This means that there are no controls at the intersection. None of the approaches to the intersection are controlled by a stop sign or traffic signal. This is common in residential areas and rural areas with low volumes of traffic.
